About the Moving Together Conference
As a precursor to the 2024 Northwest Region American College Dance Association Conference, hosted by Weber State University, Westminster University is offering a limited-space independent half-day workshop that invites participants to arrive early and experience an intimate, inclusive experience in Salt Lake City, before heading north to Ogden for the larger ACDA conference. This is the first time an ACDA Conference host has partnered with an independent activity, creating an exciting model where institutions work together to cultivate a connected arts community. The workshop is open for registration to all community members, although ACDA Conference registrants will receive a discount code for the pre-conference event.
The Wednesday morning pre-conference features an interdisciplinary dance workshop with NYC-based dancer Jesse Zaritt and local composer Michael Wall, who are longtime collaborators, along with a screening of the film, “Moving Together” by Austin-based filmmaker Maggie Bailey. The film, which premiered at Lincoln Center in January 2023, celebrates the collaboration between dancers and musicians, moving seamlessly between Flamenco, Modern, and New Orleans Second Line dance forms, thereby emphasizing the powerful threads of connection among dance styles, dance artists, and music. Through Maggie Bailey's direction and editing, artists Michelle N. Gibson (New Orleans Second Line dancer/choreographer), Thaddeus Ford (Jazz musician), Isaí Chacón (Flamenco musician/singer), Olivia Chacón (Flamenco dancer), Michael Wall (composer), and Jesse Zaritt (contemporary dance artist), reveal the timely metaphors of embodied connection, community-building, and compassion that emerge as humans move together.
